The Mona Lisa is considered the archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. The painting's innovative qualities include the mysterious expression of the figure, delicate modelling and atmospheric illusionism. The painting is thought to depict the Italian noblewoman Lisa del Giocondo. Leonardo never gave the painting to the Giocondo family. It is believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506. Since 1797, it has been commonly exhibited in the Louvre in Paris.
