Background On Bangladesh

Bangladesh has a distinctive culture, which reflects the cultural diversity of its people. The country’s folk heritage includes songs, dances and folk literature associated with different parts of Bangladesh. The Bengali language features a rich literary heritage comprising such well-known writers and thinkers such as Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Bangladesh has it’s distinct heritage consisting of architectural monuments from the pre-Buddhistic era through to British colonial times, as well as traditional handicrafts such as block printing and wood carving. Bangladesh has a rich tradition of philosophy and religion. The country’s population is primarily Muslim, but there are also ethnic and religious minorities, including Hindus and Christians.

Sheikh Hasina is the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has served as the country’s prime minister since January 2009, and previously from 1996 to 2001. She is the longest serving Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina was born on September 28, 1947 in Tungipara, Gopalganj District. Her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was also a politician and the founder of Bangladesh. He also served as the first president of Bangladesh and a national leader in his own right. You can still find his portrait on modern Bengali banknotes.

Bangladesh 50 Taka Banknote Ft. Taka Metro

During the final days of December 2022 the Bangladesh Bank (Central Bank of Bangladesh) announced a brand new 50 Taka commemorative banknote. This banknote is dedicated to the completion and inauguration of the new Dhaka Metro Rail which is in the capital Dhaka. Yes you heard right it commemorates a Metro line. The goal of the metro is to help ease traffic in the city which is very populated. Construction for the metro began in 2016 and after the various years of hard work it began operations on December 29, 2022.

The new banknote is comes in shades of green, blue and pink. The obverse side features a portrait of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and also in the center is an image of the new red, white and green metro cars. The reverse side features another image of the functioning metro line and the newly built tracks for it to run on. In addition, on the upper right-hand corner is an image of the Bangladesh Bank seal and the year 2022. What do you think about the new banknote?
