A Bangladesh Bank official says they suspect the mischief took place when the cash was packed at Sonali Bank's Bagerhat regional branch for transfer to the Rupali Bank branch.
"I suspect the Tk 100 notes were packed into the Tk 1,000 bundles when the money was taken out of Sonali Bank's vault," Tuslidas Ray, Joint Manager (cash) at Bangladesh Bank's Khulna regional office, told bdnews24.com.
On Sunday, Tk 5 million was taken from Sonali Bank's regional branch at Bagerhat's Railroad Morh to Rupali Bank's Bagerhat branch at Rahater Morh.
The cash was brought in five packets containing fifty bundles of Tk 1,000 — each bundle containing Tk 100 currency notes worth Tk 100,000.
A total of 118 notes of Tk 100 were found in ten bundles of Tk 1,000 — leading to a shortfall of Tk 106,200 that came to light after the Rupali Bank staff counted the cash, all carrying proper Bangladesh Bank seals.
The Rupali Bank staff immediately returned with the entire cash to the Sonali Bank and lodged a complaint, pointing to the anomaly.
On Monday, a Bangladesh Bank team led by Joint Manager (Cash) Tulsidas Ray and Deputy Manager Md Shahriar visited both the Sonali Bank and the Rupali Bank branches to conduct an on-field audit.
They collected samples from both branches.
According to regulations, banks are supposed to remove the central bank’s tag from currency note bundles before giving it to a client or any other bank, but in this case, Bangladesh Bank officials say that was not done.
